Hello and welcome to Underground Salisbury!
Please feel free to look around and make yourself at home. All kinds of people are welcome here, regardless of tastes or appearance - the only requirements for membership are an open mind and an appreciation for the less mainstream type of lifestyle.
Originally created as a discussion forum for people attending the masked balls run by Danse Masquerade, it's now expanded - we hope it will become a general network of "alternative" people in Salisbury and the surrounding areas... a place to find out about social events and gigs, make and meet with friends, and discuss every aspect of life on the less conventional side of the fence.

Well, thank you ;D We got so sick of having nowhere available that we decided to create our own. It's still pretty new but we're working on that...hopefully it'll be a hive of activity in the future. Throw any suggestions/comments/requests our way and we'll see what we can do!

Well, I used to DJ years ago so if you ever need a DJ, just gimme a shout! I'm a bit rusty though (or should that be cobwebby?) Venues have always been a bit of an issue in Salisbury, but I'm sure if we have a think we could come up with something between us!

Excellent...nice to know we have a resident DJ in our midst I've occasionally toyed with the idea of organising some sort of alt event myself since everywhere is so resolutely mainstream. Nothing on the scale of the ball though... but I'm sure if we get enough members on this forum it's only a matter of time before something happens. I did once approach a couple of the nightclubs in town about hosting an alt night but it seems I'd have to hire the entire place for the night and then if I don't sell enough tickets I have to cough up for the lot out of my own pocket (frustrating but understandable I guess). Enthusiastic or not, tis a bit steep for a mad scientist's salary I'm afraid :-(

Yeah, I've also toyed with the idea of putting on an alternative night in a club but been put off for the same reasons as you - hire charge was prohibitive for someone on a low income such as myself, with no guarentee of being able to sell enough tickets to cover costs. I used to DJ in an alternative pub called the Wilton, but then the pub was bought by some extremely straight people, and it now resembles a tea room! Complete with lace curtains at the windows! So that was that venue out of the window. There is no truly alternative pub in Salisbury, let alone a club...and those that are at least friendly to alt types might not let us take over for a night...

Oh god, yeah the wilton is terrible now, went in there alittle while ago as its just up the road and our friends go there but talk about unwelcoming! I stick with the Duke of York if I do pop out for abit now as thats even closer.

You were the Wilton's DJ? What a small world... We used to go to the Wilton for a while because it was the closest local to us at the time (discounting the few closer but much rougher ones) but sadly we didn't move there until long after it stopped being alternative, and the weekly alt night got converted into a pub quiz. I felt so cheated when I found out what I missed out on The last time I was in there was just a couple of months ago and for some reason they'd even got rid of most of the seats so it was basically a room with a bar in it and not much else apart from maybe two tables. Very unwelcoming indeed… such a pity. But still. I'm not so worried about places not letting us take over for the night *yet* as the chances are, we're going to start off with only as many people as you'd get on your average "select group of people getting together for a few beers" type meetup. As long as we don't expect places to put on music specially for us, and don't go in the really chavvy places, I'm thinking we'll be fine. But the problem will come if we ever manage to grow to the stage where we actually need to take over a venue. Hopefully by that stage there'll be enough of us that it'll be worthwhile maybe hiring somewhere and doing it properly?? Yeah, I've also toyed with the idea of putting on an alternative night in a club but been put off for the same reasons as you - hire charge was prohibitive for someone on a low income such as myself, with no guarentee of being able to sell enough tickets to cover costs. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Well, I was ONE of the Wilton's DJs - there were a few of us. I played the trad goth / cyber / industrial /80's stuff, whereas the others played more rock / punk stuff. What a small world indeed... I think the people who own the Wilton now also own the Royal Oak on Devizes Road and possibly the Black Horse on Castle Street - very run of the mill family pubs. They've even got rid of most of the seats!?!? Sounds like they don't want any customers!
Yes, we probably don't need our own venue yet. The Tea Party had 6 people there today, which is a start, and we can grow into a comfy corner or a lounge bar at a good pub before we hire a room or venue. (When I say 'good pub', I just mean somewhere nice and welcoming; I'm not expecting miracles in Salisbury!)

Perhaps we should all go mob handed down to the Wilton and refuse to leave until whoever's taken it on re-instates the alternative night

We should, we should do a regular pub thing. My brother has pub wednesday where he goes out with his friends, maybe we should do similar - maybe once a month or so though as I know people have babies etc to organise and weekly maybe too much to organise and end up costing alot

I totally agree that we should have a regular monthly moot at a good pub. It remains to choose a date and a place...
Mondays are out for me, as I regularly wave my hands about slowly (Tai Chi) that night. Every 1st Thursday is out for me, as is every 2nd Wednesday, but apart from that, I am free most evenings. What about Tuesdays? It avoids the weekend rush when there'll be nowhere to sit and it'll take ages to get served. Plus Tuesdays is when I get paid so I might actually be able to buy a round! What about 3rd Tuesday of the month?
As for venues...
Well, it took me 20 mins to get a member of staff from the Ale House to open the doors to the beer garden so I could get my wheelchair in the other day...so that would not be my favoured place to meet. Plus the loos are upstairs, and even for able bods, they are a bit tricky to negotiate in New Rocks or 6 inch stilettos after a few bevvies.
I am gonna try the Winchester Gate again this weekend to see what that's like. It's a few years since I last went, and if I can find somewhere to tie up my trusty steed (Davros), it may be a go-er.
The most haunted pub in Salisbury, the Haunch of Venison, is gorgeous, very old, but tiny, but that may not matter if there's only a few of us. If one of us can get there early we can bag the little upstairs room with the mummified severed hand in the corner. What could be more fitting than that?
I shall report back forthwith.

((Hijaker on the prowl)). Anchor and Hope is quite nice and has a lovely garden for outside-y ness if the goth's are feeling brave this summer! Oh I'm now pining for the goold Ol' Phez Oh how I miss the drab dark decor with it's easy access and barely any stairs to manouevre when drunk, but hose tiny corners to hide in are killer when you're cornered by drunk ugly guys! ;D xXx

I'm unlikely to be able to make weeknights... fridays and saturdays are the only times I can reliably get babysitting. I don't mind where I go as long as it serves booze and isn't so completely chavvy that I spend the whole night cringing. I totally agree that we should have a regular monthly moot at a good pub. It remains to choose a date and a place...
