We've been running for well over a year now. Have we outgrown our name? Do we need a change? Or are we happy with the name we've got? Ideas, people! If you fancy a change, PM me with suggestions, or vague ideas of the sort of thing you'd like even if you can't think of an actual name. What should our name say to people?

I think it could do with tweeking, have had a couple of people say well its not that underground or things to that effect. Off the top of my head we could tie it into the company more like: 'Darklife - Salisbury' Doesnt sound dis-similar to 'Dark Light' plus it covers all darkly inclinded, indicates the Lifestyle of everything and that we cover more than general chat, plus the Salisbury bit but thats kind of obvious But that maybe a poor idea - Im ill and pulled it off the top of my head

I think it could do with tweeking, have had a couple of people say well its not that underground or things to that effect. Off the top of my head we could tie it into the company more like: 'Darklife - Salisbury' Doesnt sound dis-similar to 'Dark Light' plus it covers all darkly inclinded, indicates the Lifestyle of everything and that we cover more than general chat, plus the Salisbury bit but thats kind of obvious But that maybe a poor idea - Im ill and pulled it off the top of my head I've never really been happy with the name, I thought it up in ten seconds flat when I created the group and I always meant to go back and change it for something better - just never got round to it. I'm quite keen to change it if everyone else agrees, but I want to pick something that everyone likes and which more accurately represents us as a group. So... input please, everyone! I thought about calling it Darklight something or other, but decided tying it into the company would be a bad thing. I don't want to make it overtly linked to Darklight Industries because the two things are separate, despite our involvement in both. Our social group and forum are NOT the Darklight Show. I want people to be comfortable here even if they never want to go to a single DLI event. Darklife sounds cool anyway though, it does hint at people who like the darker side of lifeso it would work and it isn't blatently DLI linked despite the slight similarity in name. I'll add it to the list. When I get enough suggestions (and I'll add some of my own) I'll set up a poll for us to all vote. I'll put the old name in there too so that if people don't want to change they still have chance to voice that opinion.

I'm also wondering if we should keep the Salisbury linkage in there. Part of me says, of course, we want this network so that Salisbury alt types can get together and be friends. But the other part of me thinks that might be limiting ourselves unnecessarily and it might cause people to not join because they live outside Salisbury... I mean, what if there were someone in Southampton, which is actually still in driveable range from here? Or Warminster? Or Bath? Or Swindon? Or any of the places that aren't Salisbury but contain people we'd love to chat to and who might occasionally want to venture further afield for social purposes? Plus also there's the DLI angle. While this is not the DLI forum per se, we do invite ball attendees to join us here for ball related chat and some of them come from as much as 300 miles away. And I'm worried that they'll be put off by a forum that specifically states "Salisbury", which could leave us missing out on a lot of fun ball related chatter and the chance to make friends further afield. But I also don't want to lose the 'local' feel, the one that gives us the feeling that this is our local network for this area.
So.... dilemma.
I was thinking maybe we could go for a "South" kind of angle to it, so it's more welcoming to people who aren't specifically Salisbury, and then just publicise ourselves well in the local area so that most of the people here are from Salisbury and the surrounding areas, at least enough so that we can have a decently well attended local knees-up from time to time.
Thoughts??

I like PAs idea Darklife Salisbury or something like that.
How about Wiltshire by Night or Salisbury by night.

J.D, the name 'Salisbury By Night' was used by the local Vampire Roleplaying society run by Martin etc until the early 2000's, some people might get confused and think it's starting up again.
Other names that have been used in the past are Nighthouse and Salisbury Gothic, so I wouldn't advise on using those.
I will have a think - having a creative block right now....
I think something with the word 'South' in would be desirable, if we want to braoden our field. Or maybe 'Wessex'.

I think a change is good but no idea on a name lol.
Something with south in it sounds good so that the forum opens up a bit

Me being me I'm now gonna contradict what I said before...
I founded a local society for bellydancers 10 years ago called Wessex Arabic Dance Association. At first it was a small club just for Salisbury bellydancers, but people further afield wanted to join us so we let them. Then as we had so many members from further afield we had to reflect that in the name, hence Wessex Arabic Dance Association, although most of the members, and all our activities were in Salisbury.
But then members from outside Salisbury moaned that despite the name having Wessex in the title, we never did anything outside Salisbury. We replied that that was because only Salisbury people had volunteered to be on the committee, and we were basically creating events for our Salisbury members but were open to everyone from anywhere to attend. But we were accused of being insular, even though we hadn't changed what we'd done in 10 years, but because of the name change, people's expectations of what we would provide changed.
So while it might sound like a good idea to change the name to something including 'South' or 'Wessex', be aware that current and future forum members from further afield might feel like the name-change means that they're owed inclusion in a more concrete way, like references to their area in event listings, even events organised by Darklight in their area, and all manner of other services. We need to be very clear about what we are able to offer, with all our limited time and resources!
And yes, I know that contradicts my previous posts!

Thats a very good point V. People do tend to do that and I can kind of see both sides in a way. Awkward isnt it!

I guess it depends on what you want; but all those places like Swindon, Bath, etc have their own gothic communities, so I don't know why they'd feel excluded, other than we're talking about Goths and goths like to bitch.
I actually thought a name change would be good but now not so sure - I like the inclusive Salisbury nature (even though it seems of late that there's not really much going on) because it kept it small and tightknit and relatively drama free. If you're wanting to expand bigger, for whatever reason, drama will follow close behind because it always does.
I guess it's more a matter of do you want to keep it a bit more Salisbury focussed for the "family feel" or are you wanting to link it more to your promotion enterprise (which IMO is a completely seperate thing) at which point a more encompassing name would suit better.
Probably muddied the waters more than I cleared them, but there you are.

I don't think you've muddied them at all, Masquerade, in fact I think it's clarified a few things.
What DO we want this forum to do? Is it for ball-goers worldwide to promote and discuss the ball? Is it for local goths to chat? Is it for both? Can it do both? Can it do both in such a way so as to not confuse people or give people expectations that we can't fulfill?
Small and local IS more easy to manage, but there's ball-goers who will be checking in, probably from the New Year onwards, to find out what's happeneing with the next Ball. Should this site have two distinct sections?
By the way, the WGW Forum has the name 'Whitby' in the title and doesn't seem to exclude more far-flung punters....

i think it should do Both but just have to sections so those not local can pop in and check up on the ball stuff and those wanting the local lowdown etc can go there! as salisbury needs something to get its alt peeps together! but making the two things visually diff wouldnt be a bad thing salisbury underground is good to keep for the local alt scence but the ball stuff might want to go under its DarkLights name just my thoughts on the matter! im still really keen on getting an alternative night going esp after just being back in essex to my old local scene in southend and having a fab time ! IM SO SICK OF PUBS it kills me not having any where decent to go here! I don't think you've muddied them at all, Masquerade, in fact I think it's clarified a few things.
