i think it should do Both but just have to sections so those not local can pop in and check up on the ball stuff and those wanting the local lowdown etc can go there! I think that's a really good idea. But perhaps giving the Ball it's own seperate forum would be better.

Well, as I only joined yesterday I don't feel that I've earned the right to say one way or the other. It sounds as though most people like the specific link to it being a "Salisbury" group so how about using one of the older names for Salisbury? E.g. Sarum, Sorviodunum, Searesbyrig, Seresberi can't think of any more at the moment...

OK people, I have been giving this whole name change thing a lot of thought, also the structure of the forum in general, and reading through all your comments I have inwardly digested and come up with a plan. All aspects of this plan are up for discussion and are in no way set in stone. It’s just my thoughts on paper, ‘K?
I propose that we revamp the forum, with a new look, new logo, new name, dividing it into two distinct areas, one for local events and one for the ball and other DLI events. I don’t want to have a completely separate forum for DLI because a)I don’t think it would get used enough to warrant a separate forum entirely, and b)I don’t have the time or the energy to run two different forums as well as a website, all the other stuff I currently juggle for DLI, and all my other commitments too.
The forum would therefore remain as a single forum, but with more clearly defined sections for Local and DLI topics, so that people can easily choose between the two and it doesn't appear that Underground Salisbury runs the ball or vice versa. I'm going to try and find a better provider than proboards that allows me more flexibility in the forum design, layout etc. as Proboards is quite limiting. I will also try to find a forum that allows posting via email… some of us (me especially) struggle to access the forum site itself, due to limited time or paranoid firewalls at work or in libraries, but could quite easily communicate by email.I know of at least two providers which offer this but they don’t have the option to customise the board - so I’d be unable to make us a nice shiny new background, make custom user groups, install the obligatory cobwebs etc. and it would all look rather mainstream and stark. But presumably if I look for long enough, I’ll find something. You can find anything on the internet if you look hard enough!
Anyway, that’s the format part dealt with. Now, the name. At 5 votes in favour of changing, against three in favour of keeping it the same, it seems that a change is the way to go.
So...
I think it should sound local enough that people from this area will recognise that it's local and will want to join, and hence we’ll have good attendance at our events (the non DLI ones particularly). But I don’t think it should sound so local that people coming there from further afield will be put off from joining altogether (people who have surfed there from the main DLI site, and also random people from outside Salisbury who would actually make the effort to travel here for non DLI events if they were to join).
So. Salisbury is probably out, as it sounds too specific. Wessex and Wiltshire are also out, because they aren’t specific enough. I like the suggestion to use an older name for Salisbury, though… it’s not so blatently Salisbury, but locals will recognise it as being a local organisation. But apart from Sarum, the older names aren’t necessarily that well known (apart from perhaps Sorviodunum, but I’m not sure we could use that as a name as people would probably struggle to remember how it’s spelt).
Salisbury’s old site is called Old Sarum. The new town is New Sarum. Why don’t we become the flip side of the new site and call ourselves Dark Sarum?
Or Shadow Sarum… Sarum Shadows… Darklife Sarum… Alternative Sarum… Alt_Sarum… Hidden Sarum… Sarum Reflections… Sarum Echoes… Sarum Twilight Society… Sarum by Night… (though I don’t know if that last one would make it seem we never do anything in the daytime? Plus when I googled for the phrase ‘by Night’ to see who else used it, I found several dogging sites!!)
Some people use 'Spire' for things in this area too, so we could use that, unless people thought that sounded too religious?
Other local features could be used as a name. Five Rivers? Avon? (bit risky, that one, people might think Bristol). Wylye? Ebble? Nadder? Bourne? Stonehenge? Etc.etc. Insert other suggestions here.
If I don’t get a chorus of anguished screams, I’ll assume the format plan is OK, and will put up a poll for the above name suggestions plus any others I receive ASAP. Let me know if any problems!

Format ideas sound fine, mind you, I know so little about forum / site-building that I have no place to comment, but yeah, functional yet sexy would be cool.
As for names, 'Sarum' is okay but I doubt many people outside the district would know what it meant....we can't vouchsafe against the fact that some people did not pay attention in local history classes at school even if they ARE from Salisbury! But then, how much should we 'dumb' down to them?
Just had an idea, what about 'Dark Spires'....?

I assumed that local people (within the district) would know it meant we're local (if they didn't pay attention at school I'd think they would be able to tell from the amount of other businesses in the area that use 'Sarum' as part of their name), but people from further afield wouldn't necessarily see the local connection and therefore wouldn't be put off from joining. BUT. I *really* like the name Dark Spires!! I'll give it a couple more days for anyone else to come up with name suggestions, then I'll put up a poll. The actual forum format change might take a while as I'm right in the middle of building the new ball site, but we can at least get cracking on this name change thing!! ~G Format ideas sound fine, mind you, I know so little about forum / site-building that I have no place to comment, but yeah, functional yet sexy would be cool. Actually, I thought of another one last night - people refer to Oxford as the 'Dreaming Spires', but maybe it should be the Screaming Spires! But maybe Underground Oxford (if there is such a forum) should have first dibs on that name...
