I've been chatting with the music instructor in sprog's school for a while now as sprog is showing a penchant for music, and percussion in particular. I used to do a bit of drumming but I never got into african drumming, and the music instructor isn't a percussionist - he has therefore encouraged me to find someone who might be able to give sprog private tuition. All well and good if I were staying here, but I shan't be.
Does anyone know of any drummers who might be interested in working with my son? He is a challenging kid and can be difficult to get him to focus from one thing to the next, so patience required!
Cheers

There's a youth music organisation around here that might be able to help you; PA's a good one to talk to about that as I think she's had dealings with them in the past. PA? Do you have any idea what I'm on about or am I rambling again? Well my ex works with teenage kids musically and has done since he was one - about 13 or so years I think hes been doing it. I might be seeing him tonight so Ill ask if he knows of anyone or is willing himself - him doing it depends on his view on his ability with children that are more demanding more than anything I believe, but if he doesnt think he can he may be able to find another - he worked with Salisbury Area Young Musicians (SAYM) for years and now is a fully police checked and Wilts council IDed youth worker. Ill get back to you about it (BTW hes a drummer, bass guitar, and standard guitar player plus abit of singing on the side, the type of person you love to hate cause he can pick up and teach himself most instruments!)

Cheers, ta - I don't really know what sprog's focus is, but he's got a certain sense of enthusiasm. Maybe there's nothing there, but I would like to start sprog doing something musical - granted, it's sort of a given that the first few "lessons" would be anything but. More like just making concerted noise! But sprog used to play so seriously when we'd put Corvus Corax on - I've got photos of it, absolutely hysterical, but he'd try SO hard too.
Thanks kindly!

He sounds really sweet - Im sure thats when he wants to be, like any child! Well noise making is a good start, maybe some ear plugs would be in order for yourself and the teacher. ;D

Flute, recorder, clarinet, etc? No problem. Strings, not so much. Sadly, wind instruments aren't considered quite so cool, so at this rate I'm forever doomed to be the nerdy girl with the flute *sigh*

Music is an amazing form of therapy... even if you'd be hard pressed to recognise it as music it's still incredibly effective. I encourage DS to bang drums and generally create a lot of noise when he's stressed out or otherwise behaving negatively (he has a little electric guitar with it's own amp - sounds like a strangled cat but it's amazing how effective it can be at helping him to vent frustration when he can't, or isn't allowed, to do something!).
